Ad-N

Ad-n: Ad-n is an electro-acoustic pop-rock band that was born in Geneva (Switzerland), in 1997. While first mainly improvising, the band soon went on to concentrate on finalising songs that were individually composed by its different members. In 1999 the band had its first few smaller concerts followed by a 10-months break between 2000 and 2001, due to the different occupations of the members. In September 2001, the project was re-launched with the decision to record a complete demo album. It really is different, and we hope you'll enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it. CBK

CBK: CBK are a Liverpool based trio consisting of: Neil Campbell (classical guitar/vocals), Mark Brockelsby (Drums and Percussion) and Jay Kristensen (Bass/Vocals). Neil Campbell composes music in a range of styles, the first an extreme take on systems music a la Steve Reich, the second as a lyrical composer of pieces for solo guitar and the third, composing an array of over 100 songs and progressive rock pieces which trace a line between classic songwriting (Dylan, Cohen, (Joni) Mitchell, (Neil)Young et al) and the best of 70s Prog (King Crimson, Steve Hackett, Yes etc). It is this third aspect of Neil’s work explored the most in CBK. Coming out of the free improvisation movement in Liverpool and having worked on an electronic project with duo Jose’s Fish, and then spending three years as a prominent fixture on Liverpool’s acoustic scene, Neil now explores a hybrid of virtuoso acoustic/classical playing often processed with electronic effects. Mark Brocklesby is a drummer and sound engineer/producer who, having spent much time working on a back catalogue of self-penned tracks and Djing using live electronics in the likes of Liverpool’s Cream, had focused almost exclusively on studio engineering prior to the formation of CBK (then Triad). Into a great deal of contemporary Alternative/Dance music - Roni Size, Warp Records artists, Funkadelic and Parliament etc - he melds these influences expertly into his work with CBK as drummer/percussionist. Jay Kristensen is a multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer/producer, who has produced/engineered some of Liverpool’s finest indie talents. Jay plays bass with CBK and his enthusiasm for deployment of new technology is increasingly vital to the development of the band’s music, both live and recorded. Whilst the group is focused on performing the original material of Neil Campbell, the three individuals of CBK are jointly responsible for arrangements and production of their music. The trio line up can be, and often is, expanded with other musicians, especially cellist Nicole. You can learn more about their music at:http://www.neilcampbell.org.uk/

Conscience

Conscience: In October 2000, Dan Tordjman (drums and backing vocals) gave birth to the French prog-rock band Conscience. Since then quite a few changes have disrupted the original line-up of the band. Cyril Stauder joined the band in January 2001 after the departure of the initial bass player. He added a new voice to the band by also performing some backing vocals. In June 2001, answering an ad seeking a guitarist, Matthieu Gerbin landed in the band with his head full of Megadeth, Coroner and Pain of Salvation, and took up the then-vacant lead guitar and lead vocal roles. He brought in his suitcase Hervé Pfeiffer who from then on performed the duties of rhythm guitar and backing vocals. Soon after that, Gérald Tanty (former keyboard player in one of Herve's ex combos), freshly arrived in Paris, integrated himself into the band. The band then started composing new songs and played its first concerts in late 2001. In the summer 2002 Dan Tordjman announced that he can no longer be involved in the band as much as his position required, and as a result he decided to quit the band, leaving the spot open for a new drummer. Cyril Allouche was one of the first people to answer the call and became an official member of Conscience at the end of October. From July to December 2002, the band worked on its first official 4 track CD, Bereavement Before Dawn, released on January 27th 2003. Conscience can be found at http://www.cyberconscience.com

Darling

Darling:Hal Darling is a composer who plays drums. He plays keyboards a little too, as the drums have certain limitations as a medium for composition. He first picked up the sticks at age six following the examples set by two older brothers. By age thirteen he developed an attraction for rock music that was complex, influenced by jazz and classical ideas. His high school years were spent playing and eventually writing music that was truly awful, - but it aspired to be something more. He went on to study with jazz great Ralph Humphrey and studio legend Joe Porcaro at the Percussion Institute in Los Angeles. A brief stint as a studio drummer was followed by clinical presentations and private teaching. A search for the perfect gig led to a move to Europe, which in turn resulted in his decision to build a studio. Upon his return to the United States he chose to abandon live work and concentrate on composition and recording. In December of 1996, Hal released his eponymously titled debut to worldwide critical acclaim. Comparisons to the music of King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Gentle Giant and the RIO movement were common. His second effort "D2R" was released in the first quarter of 2003. Hal hopes to refine his instrumental and compositional experiments in a fashion that will provide the listener with music that is as entertaining as it is challenging. You can hear more of Hal Darling's work at his website: http://haldarling.com

Die with Dignity

Die With Dignity: Die with Dignity is an avant-garde post-punk industrial band. This very unusual band contains four musicians from Germany: Brenner (bass, vox, keys, drum machine), Broszat (vox, keys, self-built oscillators + modulators, tape-effects, drum machine, mixing desk), Repgen ([rhythm] guitars, keys). and Guderia ([lead] guitars, trumpet, violin, flutes). Founded in 1996, when finally the creative heads conceived the revolutional combination guitar/ bass/ keyboard/ vocals, this encountered scepticism in the environment of the band. No-one believed that it would be possible to create a concise, homogeneous sound with such heterogenous components. Now they were ready to create a new sound, and soon afterwards they proceeded to Gawl's Singing Room in order to record several songs live in studio, some of which now are issued as their debut-CD Kraut?.Prepare for the onslaught at http://die-with-dignity.de

Matthew Kennedy, former of the renowned progressive band Discipline, plays the bass. Guitarist Alan Rutter was one third of the Los Angeles-based neo-prog trio RCA Project. "Burdened Hands" is the self-producd debut from Eyestrings, a 10-track, 66-minute album of original rock music with a rich spectrum of influnces. [Warning: unauthorized name-dropping ahead ...] You may hear hints of Peter Gabriel, Radiohead, Genesis, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Tom Waits, and some of your other favorites. The variety from one track to the next offers a welcome diversionfor music lovers who long for an album that doesn't get bogged down in one thing. And somehow, this variety never betrays the cohesiveness of the album. But of course, you should hear it and judge for yourself ... They released the album independently in 1993 and were amazed when it set the stage for a successful career that now includes nine albums and an enthusiastic, world-wide fan base that numbers in the thousands. Over the years they continued to hone their skills and in 2002, Lex Rex firmly established Glass Hammer as one of the most beloved and successful progressive rock groups in the world, and it quickly became the group's biggest "hit" with their established audience, and earned them thousands of new fans as well. Michaels' thirty-five year musical career has allowed him to share the stage with many of his jukebox heroes, including Berry, Davis, and Day, not to mention Wolfman Jack, Badfinger, Bobby Vinton, the Marvelletes, and the Chiffons. "[It] was a surreal, cartoonish experience, like scenes out of some Fellini movie. But in the end, what I got out of the experience was just that; out." "Out" meaning the development of a harmonic palette that unabashedly defies conventional parameters. In creating this CD, Michaels tapped into a muse that in turn tore into his brain with a vengeance. He built a laboratory of sound within his Chicago-based headquarters and set himself loose upon it. Michaels describes his venture into "Inner Worlds Part One" as a "schizophrenic mess that turned into a happy accident" (by Stephan Benoit). Early versions of the material that ended up on Inner Worlds can be found right here at Progressive Edge at "online Music." Kurt Michaels can be examined more closely at his site: http://kurtmichaels.com/index.html

INFERNO is not just a dynamic musical journey, but a multi-media project that challenges and effects the listener, and makes a strong artistic statement... yet fits all head sizes. Consider it something resembling a fortuitously fleeting glance into the mind of a canine-endorsed, distinguished, compassionate, brooding, flippant and non-british gentleman (and allroundniceguy™). Providence

Providence: Originally formed Winnipeg, Canada in 1991, the group imploded in late 1994, and reformed in 2002 without original drummer Ben Rusch, who rejoined in 2003An artsy progressive rock band known for it's volume, energy, odd lyrical themes, and musical intricacy. The favorite time signatures are 7/4 and 13/8, and songs are rarely less than epic in scope. "Well, originally, the three of us would get together in Bob's basement, drink a few beers, smoke a little something almost entirely unlike tobacco, write some obscure confusing lyrics, and generally try to outplay each other. Playing in Providence is like everybody soloing in time and key. Nothing much has changed, except there's four of us in a different basement now..."
