Qwestion – Y
(Independent Release, 2002)
By: Scott Alisoglu
Qwestion’s
Y (clever title, eh?) is 8 scalding tracks and 56 minutes of pure
instrumental/experimental/progressive/hard-rocking bliss. The guitars are
like buzz saws, the bass slithers all over hell like a snake on
amphetamines, and the drumming is the polar opposite of a marching band.
There are also a few strange effects thrown in for good measure.
“Forest of the Norm” and “YacHacHa” are epic journeys into sound, clocking
in at over 12 and 13 minutes, respectively. “Muse” is a hypnotic trip of
atmospheric bass playing. Even “A Little Swim Before the Walk,” which is
basically some dude singing/jamming in the shower, somehow fits as an intro
to “Forest of the Norm.”
Just when you think you can’t take any more of the ripping guitar and
off-time drumming, Qwestion takes a left turn into the ethereal
world. It’s an interesting musical experience, but has enough punch to keep
all you old school metal heads from leaving the room.
